SILVER WATER – The 123rd edition of the annual United Church Women (UCW) Canada Day Picnic in Silver Water will be noted for huge crowds for all its events and most importantly fun for family and friends.
The theme for this year’s event was ‘Vacation Destinations’ and many people in the community kept this theme in mind in putting up displays on their front lawns, and even t-shirts, at the celebrations held this past Saturday in the community.
One of the many highlights of the annual UCW picnic was the parade which always provides great participation, very creative floats and a huge crowd of parade watchers.
Taking first place in the best float was the UCW with their entry Under the Hawaiian Sun. The Bois family float Jamaica placed second.
The best walking entry prize was won by Erwin Thompson and Cameron (Scotland), with Myra Duncanson’s Iceland theme coming in second.
The award for best children’s entry in the parade was the Kemp Lake Crew entry I Love Hawaii, with second place going to the Everetts’ and Addisons’ Silver Lake float.
Taking top spot in the Best of Antique category was the Ken Fogg entry, a 1937 Ford Coupe, while the Silver Water Fire Engine placed second.
The laughter could be heard all over the Silver Water complex property as kids of all ages took part in games such as running, egg toss, the three legged race, water balloon toss and much more. There was also a barbecue held throughout the afternoon and a fish pond for children.
Meanwhile, you could buy a delicious pie at the vendor’s booth or at the bake sale held early in the afternoon.
The Robinson Township Volunteer Fire Department also had several fire trucks on hand and handed out plastic fire chief helmets to the children, while also setting up a sprinkler system for the children to cool off on what was a very warm day.
A community baseball game also took place on Saturday afternoon.
