Manitoulin’s generous spirit evident at 45th annual MSS Awards Night

MSS AWARDS NIGHT—Rainbow District School Board Education Director Norm Blaseg presents the Governor General Academic bronze medal to Stephanie Carlisle as the student who achieves the highest average in their graduating year from a secondary school during the Manitoulin Secondary School annual awards night ceremony.

M’CHIGEENG—Manitoulin Secondary School’s (MSS) graduates were once again honoured in that school’s annual Christmas tradition of Awards Night on December 18, the 45th edition, with over 200 awards gifted numbering over $49,000.

“We are proud of our graduates,” MSS Principal Laurie Zahnow began the evening by saying. “They are a part of Manitoulin Secondary School’s colourful history. Their contributions have left a unique mark on our school. It is our sincere hope that we have been able to prepare our graduates with the skills necessary to be successful in their chosen area of interest. We, at Manitoulin Secondary School, have every confidence that our graduates will continue to be outstanding citizens of our Canadian communities. We trust that we have played an important role on assisting them to accomplish their goals.”

Ms. Zahnow continued by thanking the parents and the community for their “ongoing, overwhelming support” of MSS. “We are truly a community school. It is due to the generous contributions of our community that we are able to assist our students in their post secondary endeavours. To the numerous businesses, individuals, service groups, community groups and organizations who have been contributed, thank you for your ongoing sponsorship.”

Rainbow District School Board (RDSB) First Nations Trustee Grace Fox addressed the graduates and gave her congratulations. “May your lives be filled with much happiness, success and starfish,” she smiled, referencing a story shared with the grads about making a difference in life.

“It gives me tremendous pride and pleasure to attend tonight’s 45th annual Awards Night,” said RDSB Trustee Larry Killens. “It’s fitting that this ceremony takes place during the time of giving,” he added, noting the many donors who supported the graduates.

“You’ve worked hard to achieve your diploma, and now it’s your time to shine,” he said.

“I look at your eyes and I see a lot of determination,” Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha said to the students. “Now take those eyes and open them wide. These past few years are just a sliver of the taste of what’s to come. Don’t stop asking questions, stay attentive, keep looking. Some of you will leave the Island, but don’t forget about us,” the MPP urged the graduates.

Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing Carol Hughes also took to the podium, noting that education is among the most important endeavours one can take in life, “one that’s built on the strong foundation of parents, grandparents, guardians, teachers, coaches and community organizations. It’s clear your success is a community success as well.”

“You’re embarking on the next journey of your life with your roots firmly planted on Manitoulin, but it remains to be seen where these wings will take you.”
