LITTLE CURRENT – A group of community-minded volunteer elves have hatched a plan to provide a Christmas Day community lunch for folks who might be on their own this holiday.

According to the head elf organizing the event, the free lunch (yes, there is too such a thing) will be a good old fashioned country meal, with turkey and a host of trimmings.

“There are a lot of folks who are on their own at Christmas time and you likely aren’t going to be cooking up a hot roast turkey and everything when there is only yourself or one other person,” said the head elf. The elves themselves have insisted on anonymity at this point. “If you want to know who we are, then show up at the Little Current United Church Hall on Christmas Day,” laughed the head elf. (The Expositor staff are associate elves in this case.)

The event is essentially RSVP, with those interested in coming requested to call The Manitoulin Expositor office to let the elves know how many to plan for. “The cut-off date will be December 20,” said the head elf. “If folks show up later and we still have food, we will still feed you, but knowing ahead of time will really help us to plan things out.”

The Expositor office phones are monitored from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday. The phone number is 705-368-2744.

“People can leave their name and telephone number—especially if they need to be picked up,” said the head elf. The Christmas Day lunch will be serving the folks in Little Current, stretched out to Sheguiandah or Honora Bay, and volunteers will be standing by to pick up folks in those communities wishing to attend the dinner who don’t have their own transportation.

The Little Current United Church Hall seats approximately 80 people, so there will be plenty of room, but there are no takeouts. “We will have no takeouts available,” confirmed the head elf. “If you are alone on Christmas Day and would like some company, we would be glad to have you.”

The elf brigade is not in need of any volunteers at the moment, having already found plenty of willing hands to share the load, but monetary donations towards the effort will be gratefully accepted.

“People who wish to contribute can drop off their donation at The Expositor office in Little Current,” said the head elf. “We will have a donation jar at the lunch as well, but although we are accepting donations, you don’t have to pay anything to come out and have dinner. Christmas is a stressful and expensive time of year for lots of people, we don’t want anyone not coming out because they don’t have any money.”

The Christmas Day meal will take place from 11 am to 1 pm on Christmas Day at the Little Current United Church Hall. Please let the elves know if you are planning to attend by calling The Expositor at 705-368-2744 between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday. Those wishing to make a donation to the cause can drop off their cash donation at The Expositor offices in Little Current between 9 am and 5 pm or add to the donation jar at the event. Please register your intention to come to the lunch (and if you need a ride there), by Friday, December 20 at 5 pm.
