If it couldn’t be at the bridge there should at least be a sign recommending 14-day self isolation
EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is an open letter to Gordon/Barrie Island Reeve Lee Hayden and has been reprinted here at the author’s request.
To Reeve Lee Hayden,
The federal and provincial governments are advising people stay home and for people to avoid travelling to their cottages; this will save lives. We are grateful the Island health care professionals issued a statement supporting these recommendations. We are also grateful M’Chigeeng and Billings township declared emergency status. Not only do M’Chigeeng checkpoints restrict visitors and protect their members, the data collected show travellers disregard the seriousness of this pandemic and therefore endangering people’s safety.
If a checkpoint at the bridge is not possible, a large sign should be placed with recommendations including self-isolating for 14 days. Together we can make a difference and protect the citizens of Manitoulin Island. And that is why we hope you reconsider your position and side with Billings township and the First Nations and declare Gordon/Barrie Island emergency status.
