SUDBURY—Artists on Elgin is pleased to be featuring ‘Recent Paintings’ by renowned Northern Ontario artist Ivan Wheale for the month of November. Mr. Wheale, who annually exhibits at Artists on Elgin, will be in attendance for the opening reception on Saturday, November 8 from 1 to 4 pm. The public is encouraged to come to Artists on Elgin to enjoy Mr. Wheale’s latest works and celebrate his 80th birthday.
This collection of Recent Paintings features something truly unique for Mr. Wheale. Of the 18-piece collection, four are oval shaped which gives the viewer a different perspective of his surroundings. Staying true to his subject matter, Mr. Wheale’s paintings reflect the life and landscapes of Manitoulin Island.
“It is always a treat when we receive Ivan’s new work,” explained Courtney Natale, business promotions co-ordinator for The Northern Artist Gallery/Artists on Elgin. “He is in a league of his own artistically—we are lucky to have him and his work in our gallery.”
Mr. Wheale was born in Sunderland, England in 1934. Throughout his career, he has held nearly 100 solo exhibitions and his work has been exhibited in even more group exhibitions. His works hang in 42 public and corporate collections, including the Royal Collection and the Dean’s Collection at Windsor Castle in England, the Government of Ontario, the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, the Canada Council Art Bank, the Premier of Ontario’s office in 2004, and the Arts Pavilion “Man and His World” in Montreal. His numerous awards include an Honourary Degree L.L.D. from Laurentian University, the Ontario Ministry of Culture, the Rotary International Paul Harris Award, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council.
