A handy roundup of Canada Day (and weekend) events, activities
MANITOULIN—This Canada Day, everyone is invited to participate in a host of events right across Manitoulin, which extend from the Thursday holiday right into the weekend.
Providence Bay’s Harbour View Interpretive Centre will once again play host to its annual Canada Day celebrations on Thursday. From 1 pm to 4 pm, children can play games and activities at the centre; entertainment will be on site, and cake and refreshments will be served from 7 pm to 9 pm.
Families in town are invited to take part in the house-decorating contest, with prizes donated by local merchants. Then, at 10 pm, a fireworks display will dazzle people gathered on the beach.
Mindemoya will host the Central Manitoulin Lions Club Homecoming Weekend between July 2 and 4 at various sites throughout town.
Highlights include a Slo-Pitch tournament at the ball fields behind the community centre throughout the weekend, and a Friday night Northern Ontario Music Association Wall of Fame show honouring Ronald Tann and Isabelle Skippen. A dance will follow with music by Down Yonder.
The ever-popular parade will kick off at 11 am on Saturday, and the elimination draw, dinner, and dance will take place that evening. On Sunday, athletes will battle it out for the Mindemoya Classic run, canoe, and paddle triathlon.
In M’Chigeeng, the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation will host the annual recitation of the Great Wampum on July 1 at 12 pm, followed by the opening of the new museum exhibit, Gashkibidaagan: Medicine Pouches of the Anishinaabe.
The next day, on July 2 at 7 pm, the OCF will host a gala opening for a new exhibit by artist Duncan Pheasant, which is a free event to public.
Little Current is hosting a new event this year, the Canada Day Summer Fair, which takes place on July 1. It features an in-water boat sale, where boats will be available for purchase at the downtown finger docks from 10 am to 6 pm; a pedestrian mall from 10 am to 8 pm, where vendors, artisans, bakers, and growers will have wares for shopping; and a town-wide yard sale.
Children’s games sponsored by the Howland-Little Current Skating Club will start downtown at 11 am, and the Canada Day cake will be served at 12 pm in front of the post office. From 9 am to 1 pm, the Manor will host its annual silent auction, yard and bake sale, with all proceeds going to the Manor auxiliary.
An open mike afternoon kicks off at 4 pm, and singers are welcome to offer their rendition of their favourite artists. The day will also feature the debut of Manitoulin Tourism Association song contest winner Emily Cortolezzis, who will sing her song, “The Island.”
From 6 pm to 8 pm, Hardy Peltier and the mason Dixon Line will perform downtown; bring your own lawn chairs for a place to sit.
At the Burpee-Mills complex in Evansville, starting at 6 pm on July 1, residents are encouraged to enjoy a potluck supper, followed by an evening of music with Mel Fredrick and Friends. Participants are encouraged to bring their friends, guitars, and other instruments for an evening of fun and music.
In South Baymouth on July 1, people will celebrate their family heritage with Canada Day fireworks starting at 10:15 pm. July 3 will be celebrated as Family Heritage Day, with events starting at 10 am: a bake table, silent auction, barbecue lunch, parade, and fish supper will all be on offer for participants.
Ice Lake will hold its annual community picnic on July 1 at the Ice Lake picnic grounds. Bring your favourite dish to the potluck lunch and supper, and enjoy a bazaar, auction, fish pond, horseshoe tournament, and games for all ages. Organizers ask pet owners to refrain from bringing their dogs to the celebration.
Gore Bay’s events will kick off with a walking parade starting at 10:30 am at Manitoulin Lodge, followed by Jewell’s Collision classic car show from 11 am to 2 pm in downtown Gore Bay.
Beach-lovers will enjoy the sandcastle-building competition; up for grabs are cash prizes and free lemonade at Gordon’s Lodge. Other free events and activities include paddleboat and barracuda rides at Canadian Yacht Charters and Canada Day cake by Ultimately Chocolate at Loco Beanz.
Buoy’s Restaurant will have live entertainment and Canada Day pizza, and kids can take in a kids’ dance from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the community hall.
Also throughout the day there will be a bake sale, barbecue, face painting, yard sales, sand boxes, water games, ice cream sundaes, games, and prizes, and local merchants will have special Canada Day sales throughout town.
