MANITOULIN—Both the Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) Mustang boys’ and girls’ hockey teams are heading into playoffs this week.
“The division B Playoffs are set,” said Mustang boys’ Coach Steve Doane. “In our series we play Espanola this coming Wednesday (February 14) at 1:30 pm in Espanola. Game two is Thursday (February 15) at 4:30 pm at the Northeast Town Recreation Centre. Game three, if necessary, is set for the following week on Wednesday, February 22 at 3 pm in Little Current. In the other series. Lasalle is playing Lockerby with the winners of the two series set to meet in the B final.”
This past weekend the Mustang boys played in the Bur Bear Tournament in Burlington.
“We dropping all four of our games,” said Coach Doane. “We actually outplayed our opponents in two of the four games, but had trouble scoring goals. We have also been hard hit with the injury bug in the last few weeks. We started the season as a four line hockey team and were operating with less than two lines the last week. I am hoping that we get some guys back for the playoffs and, if not, the remaining players are going to have to step up and fill the holes left by injuries.”
The Mustang girls have also been hard at play facing off against L’Horizon last week, tying 3-3.
“Last Tuesday (February 6) we played Confederation and won 8-1,” said Mustang girls’ captain Faith Taylor. “Then, on Thursday (February 8) we played Confederation again and won 8-0. Our upcoming games are the semi finals and it’s a best two out of three series. The games are Thursday, February 15 at 5 pm in M’Chigeeng, the team we play is to be announced, Tuesday, February 20 is in Sudbury, and then Thursday, February 22 it’s back in M’Chigeeng at 5 pm, if needed.”
