SHEGUIANDAH—Batman’s Cottages and Campgrounds in Sheguiandah has paid homage to the campground’s founder Ralph Batman, renaming the park’s Main Street ‘Ralph Batman Blvd.’
“Ralph Batman started Batman’s,” explained Lisa Deschamps, who purchased Batman’s 10 years ago with her husband Andre. “He created this whole park and we thought it was fitting to honour him—without Ralph this wouldn’t have existed.”
Mr. Deschamps explained that Mr. Batman started the campground back in 1967, designing it with larger, more private sites than other parks.
“We are also celebrating our 10th year this year too, so we wanted to do something special to honour the park’s founder,” said Mr. Deschamps.
A special dinner was held to mark the street renaming at the park, but Mr. Batman was under the weather and unable to attend so the Deschamps presented the street sign to Mr. Batman last week.
“I was very surprised,” Mr. Batman told The Expositor after he learned of the street renaming. “It was very nice of them to do that.”
“I built the campground 50 years ago,” continued Mr. Batman. “I thought it would be neat and a good business idea. I ran the park with my family. I built it so guests would have privacy and it was quite popular. We had a lot of interesting people come to stay over the years.”
