Manor to celebrate 50th anniversary with Golden Gala fundraiser event

Centennial Manor Golden Gala

MANITOULIN—The Manitoulin Centennial Manor (MCM) will be celebrating it’s 50th anniversary with the Golden Gala Fundraiser next weekend on Saturday, May 6 at the Little Current Recreation Centre.

“Everything has been going really well,” said Manor board member and gala committee member Wendy Gauthier of the preparations for the gala. “We sold out of tickets for the gala in 28 days—which is amazing. To me, selling the tickets that quickly demonstrates that people value the Manor. We sold tickets to individuals across the Island and Espanola. There were a lot of families that bought tickets also—both of current and past residents. There are a lot of worthy causes, so we are fortunate that a lot of people see the Manor as a worthy place to donate their money.”

Ms. Gauthier explained that planning for the gala began over a year ago, in February of 2016.

“We wanted to do something to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Manor, but also fundraise for the home,” shared Ms. Gauthier. “Our current fundraiser, which the funds from the gala will be going towards, is to raise $75,000 for the installation of ceiling patient lifts. These devices will enable the comfortable and safe transfer of patients from their wheelchair to bed.”

The donations for both the silent auction and live auction have been very generous, said Ms. Gauthier.

“We have had donations from as far away as Ottawa,” Ms. Gauthier told The Expositor. “It has been very wide-spread.”

Some of the larger live auction items include a package of four Blue Jays tickets and a travel voucher, a propane patio heater, a Sudbury get-away package, a Killarney Mountain Lodge package, a kayak, a Broil King barbecue, two VIP Country Fest tickets with an artist meet and greet, a Chi-Cheemaun ferry sunset dinner cruise and art from Judy Martin.

There are approximately 20 live auction items and 80 silent auction items. Ms. Gauthier explained that the silent auction items are grouped in theme baskets, perfect for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts or a ‘your day’ gift.

Ms. Gauthier commended the hard work of her fellow gala committee members which include Sharleen MacDonald, Wilberta Leeson and Cathy Morden.

“We have had an amazing team of volunteers, about 25 along the way that have made the gala possible,” Ms. Gauthier said. “We are also thankful to the Northeast Town council that donated the use of the facility.”

The Manor Golden Gala begins on Saturday, May 6 at 5 pm with the silent auctions preceding the dinner, followed by the live auction. The night will conclude with the drawing of the $2,000 door prize (funds were donated by two individuals for the purpose of providing a large door prize).

There will also be raffle tickets available throughout the evening for a beautiful Ivan Wheale painting which he donated to the cause earlier this year.
