Gore Bay’s April Torkopolous to represent Island at area public speaking competition

NEW LISKEARD— April Torkopolous of Gore Bay will be competing at the Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking area competition this weekend in New Liskeard.

Last month, April placed first representing Zone H3 at the District H Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking competition in Sudbury.

A Grade 10 student at Manitoulin Secondary School, April also made it to the zone competition two years ago for her speech about going to high school, placing third.

Her speech this year is about Canada and Canada’s 150th birthday. She also talks about Confederation, what Canada was like 150 years ago, Canadian stereotypes and Canada’s future as a country.

Representing the Gore Bay Legion Branch #514, April’s speech about Canada placed first at the branch, zone and district competition in her division.

April will be presenting her speech at the area competition this Saturday, April 22 in New Liskeard. If she is wins her division, she will move on to the provincial competition in Stratford on May 6.
