ROBERT FINDLAY EDINGTON, M.B, Ch.B, MD, FRCS (C)
Dr. Bob Edington of Whitefish Falls, Ontario, passed away at the Espanola General Hospital on December 16, 2009 in his 83rd year. Predeceased by his sister, Margaret of Scotland. He is survived by his children, Bruce (Maggie), Brenda, Lee (Mike) and Jason (Stacey), and grandchildren, Ian, Emily, Chester, Luke, Eric, Taylor, Merryl, Walter and Peter as well as by dear friend, companion and medical school classmate, Dr. Helen Wright of Ottawa, Ontario. Bob was born in Glasgow, Scotland and graduated from Trinity College Glenalmond and then University of Glasgow in 1950 where he excelled at academics and all sports. After internship he accepted a scholarship to McGill University and was involved in some of the early research on Rh factor in pregnancy. After working as an Inco doctor in Sudbury during the 1950s, he and his family moved to Akron, Ohio to complete training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. On his return to Canada he worked in Cornwall initially and then returned to Sudbury to a specialty practice. Bob was innovative in his medicine and was instrumental in developing a strong Obstetrics and Gynecology program in Sudbury. He was one of the first to introduce laparoscopy to Sudbury, and after active practice, continued outreach clinics in Espanola, Little Current and Elliot Lake that he started in the 1960s. Bob lived an active and adventurous life. He was an avid sailor, skier, scuba diver and tennis player. He was a life-long learner and completed his BA in anthropology in 1986. He retired to Whitefish Falls where he actively contributed to the community and the Espanola Public Library. A memorial service was held Monday, December 21, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bourcier Funeral Home, 222 Spruce Avenue, Espanola. If desired, donations may be made to the ACU Unit of the Espanola General Hospital, the Espanola Public Library or a charity of your choice and would be appreciated by the family.
